Winstead Rezoning Decision

On 1/19, the School Board voted unanimously to rezone Franklin Green, Spencer Hall and Willow Springs to Pearre Creek Elementary and to allow restricted open enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year to Winstead to 50 students from the three rezoned neighborhoods (in addition to rising fifth graders and siblings who already have the option to grandfather). All families who open enroll must provide their own transportation. Only those siblings that follow the "grandfathering" policy will be allowed to open enroll in future years. The forms for requesting open enrollment will be made available on February 1 and will be due by May 15. Permission is granted on a first-come-first-served basis. Not including students who choose to open enroll, Winstead's enrollment will go from approximately 742 this year to 498 next year. Pearre Creek will open with approximately 453 students from Winstead and Walnut Grove. If your child will attend Pearre Creek, be sure to visit the school's website and sign up for Principal Beth Ferguson's e-mail list. Also, there will be a Pearre Creek Parent Meeting at the Williamson County Library on Thursday, January 21, from 6:00 to 7:30. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Henke at henkster@comcast.net.

Winstead Rezoning Update

At the School Board Work Session on Thursday 12/3, new Superintendent Mike Looney asked the Board to postpone the rezoning vote for the new west Franklin elementary school until 1/19 so he would have time to absorb all of the information and look at the options. The Monday 12/7 information session at Walnut Grove will be rescheduled for 1/5. Affected communities (Franklin Green, Spencer Hall, and Willow Springs) should receive a call from Carol Birdsong tonight.
We have presented a new proposal to the Board and WCS staff that would leave Winstead untouched by drawing from other nearby neighborhoods already in the Grassland Middle/Franklin High feeder pattern. We are encouraged that the option will be explored prior to the January meetings. If you haven't already communicated your thoughts on the rezoning to the School Board, please share your ideas with them: dwayneg@wcs.edu; janicem@wcs.edu; janinem@wcs.edu; timothym@wcs.edu; garya@wcs.edu; terryl2@wcs.edu; susang3@wcs.edu; pata1@wcs.edu; barryw@wcs.edu; billp@wcs.edu; markg@wcs.edu; jamesb1@wcs.edu.
If you would like a copy of the proposal or would like to be added to the Winstead Rezoning Google Group, please contact Kim Henke (henkster@comcast.net) or Holly Neibaur (neibaurfamily@gmail.com).

For those affected by the rezoning, there will be a discussion meeting of the West Franklin School on Monday, December 7th from 5:00-7:00pm at Walnut Grove Elementary.

October 28, 2009

In a 10/12 memo Dr. David Heath, Interim Superintendent for Williamson County Schools, detailed "Zoning Parameters for the New Elementary and Middle Schools."  The new West Franklin elementary school located inside the Westhaven neighborhood will open in AUGUST 2010.  It will have an initial enrollment of 300-450 students in grades K-5.  Students currently attending Walnut Grove and Winstead Elementary will be rezoned for this elementary school.  (We assume that Sullivan Farms will not be affected, but approximately 1/3 of Winstead's students live elsewhere.)  The District Office stated that this school needed to be built because Winstead and Walnut Grove are over capacity.

Let's get some facts straight:

Winstead is under capacity with enrollment down by 30 for 2009 kindergarten.
Our children are zoned for Hillsboro Middle in Leiper's Fork; Westhaven children will attend Grassland Middle.
Westhaven children are zoned for Franklin High, while our students will still be zoned for Independence.
Why were the public funds spent on an elementary school before building a middle school?
Why is our taxpayer money paying for an elementary school that doesn't have enough children to be built?

WHAT CAN WE DO?
       1. ATTEND THE MEETING Wednesday November 4 @ 6:30 at the Winstead library.
Janice Mills, 2nd District Williamson County School Board Representative, is invited to attend and answer our questions.
There may also be news organizations present. Please come without children.

       2. E-MAIL THE ENTIRE VOTING SCHOOL BOARD and express why this rezoning is not in the best interest of our children.
           http://www.wcs.edu/district/sbmembers.htm

       3. SPREAD THE WORD Forward this e-mail to everyone you can think of that this may affect.

AS OF TODAY, THIS IS JUST A PROPOSED RE-ZONING.

We still have a chance to make a difference in the board's decision.
Let's join together to keep our children at Winstead!

There is a lot of great information in each and every newsletter, and we encourage everyone to read it thoroughly each month to find out about past activities and events as well as what is coming up!  Thank you to all the parents who volunteer and are diligent to get information about their committees and events to us for the newsletter!

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE:  Be looking for the instructions on how to subscribe to our new PTO email distribution list.  After January 31st, we will switch over to the new list.  From what we understand, the issues with the current list are due to it containing too many invalid email addresses since we carried it over from last year.  We THANK YOU for your patience and cooperation as we are doing everything we can to keep the list up and running smoothly for easy and effective communication!!!

Thank you to all who registered for the PAAW Program.  Before break every child that submitted a registration form received a note detailing if they got into a club and which one. If you have not received that note, please contact Liz Cramer at eacrame1@aol.com immediately.

The registration fee of $20 is due this Thursday (the 8th).  Make checks payable to Winstead PTO and send in an envelope marked for PAAW Program with your child's name.  Failure to pay on time will forfeit your child's spot in that club.

Thanks, Liz Cramer
